In this posting I’d just like to document that, while numerous VNC and RDP applications exist, both under Linux and Android, I have determined first-hand that a specific Server + Viewer combination works:
- On the Linux (Debian / Stretch) host machine, I custom-compiled ‘xrdp’ v0.9 with ‘fuse’ support, and additionally, installed ‘tigervnc-standalone-server’ from the package-manager. This machine is using ‘LXDE’ as its desktop manager.
- On the viewing device, an Android tablet, I purchased and installed ‘Remote RDP (Enterprise)‘.
When accessing the host machine, with appropriate profile settings on the Android tablet’s application, I’m greeted with a drop-down menu of possible ways to connect – that is generated by the host machine XRDP configuration, from which I select the ‘Xvnc’ method of connecting.
And then, in addition to the welcome result, that this configuration creates a new session on the host machine, which the tablet can view, I obtain the even-more welcome result, that on the host machine, the folder ‘~/thinclient_drives’ leads to a locally mounted folder that maps back to the Internal SD Card of my tablet. This is, assuming that I have the “SD Card” option checked, in the profile, accessible in ‘Remote RDP’… I also need to have ‘XRDP’ checked and certain other options chosen for compatibility.
This last feature replaces any need for several other applications because on the desktop belonging to the host machine, using the ‘PCManFM’ File-Manager application, as seen through the tunnelled VNC Session, I can Copy files from the SD Card of my tablet, or Paste files to the same SD Card, thus sharing relevant files from and to the host machine.
